A Course to Help Faith-Based Leaders in the Christian Tradition Become Effective Advocates and Organizers for Social Justice

This course is designed to help Learning Partners understand the history of the Black Church and Black-led liberation movements and to apply those lessons to the challenges of systemic oppression in our time. In the wake of the social uprisings following the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd (and so many others) in 2020, JCSTS offers this course to help our Learning Partners understand the possibilities for transformation that are offered by a theology and practice of liberation that is rooted in the Black Church.

The course will be offered online in a Facilitated, Cohort-Based Learning Environment. Learning Partners and the Cohort Facilitator will meet weekly to share reflections on the course assignments and related experiences with one another. The course will be offered in four units:

The Legacy of the Black Church and Introduction to the Black Theology movement
Underpinnings of Systemic Oppression
Racism-Dependent Oppressions in the U.S. in the 20th Century
Black-Led Liberation Movements and Constructing a Theology and Practice of Healing and Repair
